On September 29, Hefei CAS Ion Medical and Technical Devices Co., Ltd. (CIM) achieved a major breakthrough with China’s first domestically developed superconducting cyclotron proton therapy system. The system successfully passed registration testing conducted by the Beijing Institute for Medical Device Testing (BIMT), marking a significant milestone prior to market approval and paving the way for its upcoming clinical trials.

BIMT Party Secretary and President Xu Songyan, Deputy Party Secretary Wu Kechun, Vice President Liang Zhenshi, Senior Advisor Meng Zhiping, as well as CIM Chairwoman Liu Lu, General Manager Chen Yonghua, and Deputy General Manager Li Jun attended the report handover ceremony.
As the first domestically manufactured proton therapy system based on a superconducting cyclotron—with a localization rate exceeding 95%—the project features a highly complex manufacturing process and stringent technical standards, making testing exceptionally challenging.
With strong support from BIMT leadership, the institute’s engineers demonstrated outstanding professionalism, rigorous work ethics, and unwavering dedication to overcome numerous technical and logistical difficulties during off-site testing. They successfully completed electromagnetic compatibility, electrical safety, and system performance verification tests, laying a solid foundation for the clinical application of domestically produced proton therapy systems.
During the handover ceremony, Chairwoman Liu Lu presented a silk banner to the BIMT team, inscribed with the message:
“Setting the gold standard for proton system testing with craftsmanship and professionalism — Safeguarding a national innovation for a new era of life-saving technology.”
This gesture expressed CIM’s sincere appreciation for BIMT’s dedication and expertise.
President Xu Songyan remarked, “This milestone is the result of sincere collaboration between our two teams. We hope this achievement will serve as a new starting point for deeper, long-term cooperation across more fields in the future.”

Relying on original innovation from the Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ASIPP), CIM has successfully developed China’s first superconducting proton therapy system.
The system adopts a superconducting isochronous cyclotron capable of accelerating proton beams up to 240 MeV. It is equipped with a 360° rotating gantry and pencil beam scanning technology, combined with a range shifter to achieve full energy coverage from 0 to 220 MeV. With a treatment field of up to 30 × 40 cm and a dose rate exceeding 2 Gy/(L·min), the system fully meets the clinical demands for large-area, high-efficiency, and precision radiotherapy.
Looking ahead, CIM will focus on advancing clinical preparations and registration for the superconducting proton therapy system, continuing to make steady progress and contributing to the enhancement of China’s independent innovation in high-end medical equipment and precision oncology treatment.
